The government has not increased the price of edible oil, said Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin. He made the remarks while talking to reporters on the issue of increasing the price of soybean and palm oil at an event in Purbachal, the capital, on Tuesday (October 14, 2025).
The advisor said that traders do not have the authority to increase prices without the approval of the ministry. He warned that if there is a price fluctuation, the government will use the necessary capacity.
Contrary to the Commerce Advisor's statement, the Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Bonaspati Manufacturers Association issued a press release on October 13, increasing the price of edible oil.
The release said that the new price has been adjusted in line with the international market after discussions with the Commerce Ministry, and the new price is expected to be effective from October 14. According to their announcement, the price of bottled soybean oil has increased by Tk 6 per liter to Tk 195.
On the other hand, the price of unsalted soybean oil has increased by 8 taka per liter to 177 taka. In addition, the price of a five-liter bottle of soybean oil has been increased by 23 taka to 945 taka, and the price of unsalted palm oil has been increased by 13 taka to 163 taka.
Meanwhile, although the increased price was supposed to be effective from Tuesday, a visit to various markets in the capital today showed that soybean oil was being sold at the previous price. However, buyers expressed dissatisfaction with the news of the increase in oil prices.
