Those who are mischievous about edible oil will be brought under the law, said Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan, Director General of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department. He said this at a press conference on the consumer goods market situation on the occasion of Ramadan on Thursday (February 27, 2025).
Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan said that a section of political corruption is still playing an active role in the management of the daily commodities market. Legal action will be taken against those who are mischievous about edible oil or act against the interests of consumers.
He said that some traders are not cooperating in the supply of edible oil, which can create an artificial crisis in the market. An investigation committee will be formed to investigate from the port to the retail market to find the cause of this crisis. In addition, 3 companies that refine edible oil have already been shown the notice. They have also submitted written replies. Further action will be taken after reviewing these.
Meanwhile, a surveillance operation on edible oil was conducted in the capital's Karwan Bazar on Wednesday under the leadership of Dhaka Divisional Deputy Director of the Consumer Affairs Department Bikash Chandra Das. The department issued a press release with the information obtained during the surveillance.
It said that the surveillance team of the department found that edible oil was not being displayed in visible places in some shops. The oil was being returned to the buyer as there was no oil. But during the search, a large quantity of 5-liter bottles of edible oil were found in a secret place of the shop. In addition, 6 cartons of 5-liter soybean oil produced in 2023, which expired from May to October last year, were seized.
The department says that the 5-liter bottled soybean oil produced in September last year has a maximum retail price or MRP of 818 taka. But during the surveillance, it was found that some traders are selling it for 850 to 852 taka. Moreover, some traders are hiding oil and secretly selling it at a higher price. There is no shortage of oil in the market. Some unscrupulous wholesale and retail traders are hiding oil in the hope of making huge profits, and an artificial shortage is being shown in the market.
