Wholesale traders have alleged that mill owners have created an artificial shortage of edible oil in the market ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. They are being forced to buy other products along with oil. However, if they do so, they will be punished, said Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan, Director General of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department.

He made this statement at a meeting at the auditorium of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department in Karwan Bazar on Sunday (February 16, 2025).

Claiming that other products are not being added to oil, Mohammad Shafiul Atahar Taslim, Director of TK Group, said, "These products are being offered by dealers. And the oil shortage is due to the increase in the price of raw materials in the international market and the extra time it takes for ships to return. However, edible oil companies will supply soybean oil in excess of the demand in the market by February 27."

The government has reduced the value-added tax (VAT) on some edible oils, including soybean oil.

The Director General of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department has ordered mill owners to disclose information on the production and supply of edible oil to solve the problem.

He said, "In no way can other products be mixed with edible oil. Doing so will be punishable. From now on, dealers will not need to send trucks to the mill for the product."

The Director General of Consumer Rights Protection ordered mill owners to supply oil to wholesale traders through their own transport and decentralize the business.
