The government's refusal to accept the traders' proposal to increase the price of soybean oil by 10 taka per liter has created new unrest in the market.

Wholesalers and retailers say that the price of oil has not increased again. However, the supplying companies have reduced the commission. This has increased the price of open soybean and super palm oil in the market. In the last three to four days, the price of these two types of oil has increased by about 5 taka per liter.

Recently, the Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Banaspati Manufacturers Association, an organization of edible oil refiners and marketers, wrote a letter to the Ministry of Commerce to increase the price by 10 taka per liter.

In view of this, the Ministry of Commerce decided to increase the price by 1 taka per liter after meeting with edible oil traders on Monday. However, the edible oil refiners and marketers have not yet made any official announcement about the price increase. But the price of open-edible oil in the market has increased.

On Wednesday, a liter of unsalted soybean oil was sold at a retail price of 170 to 172 taka. And a liter of super palm oil was sold at a price of 155 taka to 160 taka. Four days ago, the price of unsalted soybean oil was 169 taka, and the price of palm oil was 150 taka.

Retail traders said that the price of unsalted oil has also increased in the retail market due to the increase in wholesale prices. Talking to some small traders, it was learned that in a span of three to four days, the price of unsalted soybean oil per drum (204 liters) has increased from 32 thousand taka to 34 thousand 400 taka. And the price of unsalted super palm oil per drum has increased from 29 thousand taka to 31 thousand taka.

Meanwhile, the price of bottled oil has not increased at the retail level, but has increased in the wholesale market, on Wednesday (September 24, 2025), Md. Naeem, the proprietor of Abdur Rob Store in Karwan Bazar in the capital, said that the price of five-liter bottled soybean oil has increased by 50 to 60 taka per carton (20 liters).
